The Brazilian government is once again trying to clear Rio De Janeiro of drug gangs ahead of the 2014 world cup and 2016 summer Olympics. Their latest operation centered on Rocinha – the city’s largest slum. Thousands of police, military, and special forces descended on the slum over the weekend, backed by tanks and helicopters. Brazil’s military chief said the slum has now been cleared of all drug gangs and is fully under their control.
