Portugal is the latest European country to be hit with a general strike over proposed austerity measures. Air traffic controllers and transit workers were the first to walk off the job. They were later joined by hundreds of thousands more, including hospital staff and teachers. The Portuguese parliament is voting on a budget next week that would slash spending and raise taxes.
