Republicans have scored a major victory in a district normally viewed as a hotbed for Democrats – New York’s ninth congressional district. Republican candidate Bob Turner has won a special election there to fill the seat vacated by disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner. Turner beat out Democratic hopeful David Weprin by a 54 to 46 margin.

Disgraced Congressman Anthony Weiner has several high-profile Democrats calling for his resignation. Even President Barack Obama has said that he would resign if faced with Weiner’s dilemma. Obama also noted that the scandals mean the 7-term congressman simply can’t serve effectively – a position which seems to be echoed by the rest of the party.
