Pharmaceutical maker Merck & Company has agreed to pay out nearly a billion dollars for falsely advertising the painkiller Vioxx as an effective treatment for arthritis. They’ve agreed to pay a 322-million dollar criminal fine, and 628-million to settle civil charges. This is on top of nearly 5 billion Merck already paid out in Vioxx-related lawsuits in 2007.
