French citizens are going to the polls on Sunday in one of the most important elections in the country’s history, and the two leading candidates are making a final push! Here’s some quirky history for you. During World War I, France built a fake version of Paris in hopes of avoiding bombing by the German air force. The dummy version was just north of the real city of lights, and came complete with a fake Champs Elysee and huge cardboard cutouts. With primitive radar systems back then, the plan might have worked. But the war ended before construction of the fake city was completed.
